Bonding metal or plastic to rubber is useful in many applications. In
rubber bonding, the metal is treated with a chemical bath to remove all oils and
contaminants that could reduce the strength of the bond after molding. After the chemical
bath, an adhesive coating is applied to the parts and allowed to dry. Different coatings
are selected for the different types of compounds to maximize adhesion after the molding
process. The key for a proper bond is for the adhesive and rubber material to react
simultaneously during the curing cycle.
Once the bonding agent is applied and dried, the
metal or plastic part is placed into the cavities of the mold where one of the methods of
molding mentioned above is used.
The parts are then tested for proper bonding
according to the customer specifications.
